a用在辅音音素开头的单数可数名词前，例如a pen、a man, a ball，而an则用在元音因素开头的单数可数名词前，例如an orange、an elephant。有的单词首字母以元音字母开头，但是它的读音是以辅音音素开头，这样的单词前面用a ，例如a university。
